Marine Bioblitz

Sunshine Coast Council

Celebrating Biodiversity Through Design

Project Scope: Visual identity, promotional materials, merchandise design, and event branding for Queensland’s inaugural Marine Bioblitz citizen science event.

Challenge: Create a visually engaging identity that would appeal to both scientific experts and the general public while highlighting the Sunshine Coast’s unique marine biodiversity within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Our Approach

To capture the essence of this important conservation event, we developed a comprehensive design system centered around the rich marine biodiversity of the Sunshine Coast’s waters. The visuals needed to be scientifically accurate while remaining accessible and engaging for participants of all ages and backgrounds.

Key Design Elements:

  • Native Species Illustrations: Detailed depictions of local marine life including sea turtles, coral species, and fish that participants would encounter during the event

  • Immersive Color Palette: Rich blues, teals, and sandy golds combined with vibrant coral hues to evoke the coastal environment

  • Educational Components: Integrated infographic elements to help participants understand biodiversity data collection

  • Inclusive Design: Visually accessible graphics that appealed to all ages, from children to professional scientists

Results & Impact

The Marine Bioblitz visual identity was implemented across multiple touchpoints:

  • Digital Campaign: Social media assets and website graphics that built anticipation and educated the community about the event’s purpose

  • Event Signage: Wayfinding elements and information panels that created a cohesive experience throughout the event space

  • T-shirt Merchandise: Popular apparel that served as both a souvenir and created visual unity among participants

The design work contributed to the event’s success in engaging citizen scientists in collecting vital biodiversity data while fostering deeper connections with the marine environment. The visual identity helped unify the event’s messaging of conservation, scientific discovery, and community action.

Seabird Identification Guide

Sunshine Coast Council

Creating Tools for Conservation Action

Project Scope: Comprehensive design of an identification guide for commonly rescued seabirds, including cover illustrations, anatomical diagrams, and publication layout.

Challenge: Develop a user-friendly resource that would help wildlife rescuers, volunteers, and the public accurately identify and properly rescue seabirds along the New South Wales coastline.

Our Approach

Working in close collaboration with seabird experts and conservationists, we created a guide that balanced scientific accuracy with practical usability. The design needed to be clear, accessible, and effective as a field reference tool.

Forest Fellowship Exhibition

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Visualizing Ecosystem Connections

Project Scope: Creation of a year-long exhibition showcasing the interconnected relationships between species in the rainforest ecosystem.

Challenge: Design an engaging, educational display that would help visitors understand the complex relationships between various species within the reserve’s ecosystem.

Our Approach

For this exhibition, we developed a series of realistic illustrations centered around a strangler fig tree – a keystone species in the rainforest ecosystem. The illustrations and accompanying educational elements needed to highlight how different species work together to create a balanced, healthy forest environment.

Key Design Elements:

  • Centerpiece Strangler Fig: A large, detailed illustration of this keystone species as the focal point

  • Realistic Species Depictions: Accurate illustrations of key flora and fauna including the Wompoo Fruit Dove, Giant Earthworm, Carpet Python, Pademelon, fungi, and Crow’s Nest Fern

  • Multi-format Installation: Designed elements for floor sticker, railing banner, social media, and email signature formats

  • Scientific Accuracy: Meticulous attention to detail ensured educational value alongside visual appeal
